Once it gets here and I can make a back-up on a separate drive then I will tackle this. I have the nuclear option to reinstall windows but rather see if I can take the challenge repairing registry. I have genuine win7 installed but do not have the disc. Not sure the process to create one from what I have access to but I see tons of repair disc on ebay for pennies.
I do have partition "HP Recovery" but cannot remember anything about it. Under "recovery manager" it shows a folder but is empty. Posted 01 August - AM. That registry restore method will only work if you have System Restore points since it is wanting to use a "good" copy of the 5 registry files from one of your RPs.
But if you deleted all your RPs you can forget about that. Even if you did have RPs how would you know which one has the "good" registry files? And that method is not "easy". You can pursue it if you want and see how far you get - let's see who provide instructions on how to do it.
I think you might as well think about getting started on that because that is the direction you are being led. Almost forgot, isn't it possible boot from the disc and do Repair that would fix the registry while preserving my files that are on the same HD? I looked at my Windows 7 Restore Points and see that the registry idea would not work anyway since Windows 7 does things differently than XP. Beofre somebody suggest that idea again they should actually try it themselves and see if it works and just how "easy" it is n't.
Windows 7 does have a Scheduled Task that makes a backup copy of the registry every 10 days at AM or as soon as possible after that :. Note that in spite of what you may hear or read that the registry backup does not occur "sometimes", "every once in a while" or "when certain things happen". It is every 10 days unless you change the task. So if you were to look in the registry backup folder and check the time stamp of the files you can see how far back you could restore your registry.
In my case you can see that I could restore my registry back to the condition it was in last Friday:. A repair will probably not fix the registry if that is the problem. A repair is sometimes good for no boot scenarios. If you want you can make some bootable media from that ISO - you should have one of those anyway. My regback folder shows the same date as yours the 27th.
I'm not exactly sure if that is prior to my troubles or not because it sneaked up on me. I understand about repairing from the disc not working. I see Repair is not an option on the Guide that is on the disc. If I do a new install, after my other HDD arrives, do I have to reinstall all the drivers from manufacturer website?
